As we continue to roll out our Windows 2008 server environment, we are building new ones and not enabling WINS as we have no need for it on our network. I have found that when WINS is disabled, NIA is not able to scan, failing at "An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host". Enabling WINS allows NIA to scan successfully.
Is there a way to configure NIA to be able to scan successfully without requiring WINS to be enabled?
I'm really sorry for the late reply. Finally, I have confirmation that WINS _is_ in fact required to scan the nodes with Network Inventory Advisor. WINS is also important to let computers to be found by DNS names on the network. And that's a requirement for Network Inventory Advisor as well.
2 workarounds are possible:
1. You can enable WINS only for the time of scanning, and disable it afterwards. But we recommend having it ON all the time.
2. You can scan the nodes that have WINS OFF using an agent utility locally.
