Local Machine Group
  • AunAun February 2011

We have certain users on our domain who have admin rights on their local machines. Is there a way to check from NIA whether a user is an Admin, Power User or a restricted user on his local machine?

Also, would it be possible to see if a hard drive is password protected ?

    Thanks!

Can you check a computer's report -> Other -> Local user accounts -> Account type? What's listed there?

Which password-protection are you trying to detect? There's a number of third-party solutions for that. Is there a specific password-protection method you would like to know about?

Also, in the same report, you can find the type of user account just right to the account name. For instance:

    YourPC\Administrator - Administrator
    YourPC\testUser - User

    Ok,

The domain username is not listed under "Local User Accounts". What i need to check is if a particular domain user has admin privileges on his local machine that allow him to install applications. We set this up from the client pc's Control Panel - Manage User Accounts- Add User and after typing in the username and domain name we select a group membership. We have Admins that have complete control over their system settings, network operators (laptop users who need to change ip addresses while traveling) and restricted users.

So basically, i need to know the "Group Membership" of the domain user.

This is what i see under domain accounts:

    AE\zeeshan.razzaqi enabled / logged on

    Name: zeeshan.razzaqi
    Full name: Zeeshan Razzaqi
    Domain: AE
    Description: Parts-Service Service Dept User
Account type: Normal account (typical user)
    Home directory: no details
    Storage quota: no details
    Logon script executed: No
    Lockout: FALSE
    Password changeable: TRUE
    Password expires: TRUE
    Password required: TRUE

"Account Type" does not help and this username is not listed at all under "local user account details".

The hard disk password is assigned in bios and we do not use any 3rd party application.
The user needs to enter this password before Windows boots up. It would be great to check if this password is properly set for the required users from NIA.

    1. Concerning domain users: looking into this now. I'll update you soon.
    2. Password-protection: am I getting you right that you would like to see if there's a boot password specified in BIOS?

I tried searching around but can't figure out if the HDD password is the same as the BIOS password.

We have two passwords set in BIOS. One to prevent changes to the BIOS which is only prompted for when entering BIOS. The other is the HDD password which needs to be entered every time the system starts up. I usually see a message "HDD locked - Enter Password".

Thanks a lot for your help Jeff! I have been keeping track of these details manually and hope you can add these features soon.

    1. Seems like we can get the info you are interested in for user groups.
    2. Still investigating this. But I doubt we can collect this info.

    Hi Jeff,

is there already a solution relating the "group membership" of domain users ?
We are thinking of using / buying NIA, but this functions is a must have...
Maybe in V4 ? Then when will it be available ?

Hi again, we are still working on this. Probably this data will be available in Network Inventory Advisor 4.x, but I can't tell for sure now. We are still testing on domains.
