Operating system details
  • pgregorypgregory September 2010

    Hi,
i do like the new software reports in 3.9 and was hoping that i could interrogate on operating systems as well, but unfortunately i dont think its there.
What i ideally would like to do is on the Inventory tab , at group summary level, you already list out the operating systems and counts, but there is nowhere on the other tabs to find out who is running those operating systems
This would be a quick and really usefull summary for upgrading purposes, rather than pouring throught the Tabular reports

    cheers

    Hi again, Paul,

Actually, there are 2 ways to do what you need:

#1. Open Settings -> Software audit. Switch to "Shared templates" wait a while to get the list of shared templates updated. It syncs with the server, and gets the list of public templates.
#2. Find one of the shared templates named "Microsoft Windows". Select it and click "Add to my templates" to move it to the active ones. Close Settings.
#3. Go to Network Summary -> All Software. You will find that all grouping templates are applied, and the newly added one as well.
#4. Scroll down, and find group "Microsoft Windows". Right-click it (or use the corresponding option on the sub-toolbar) and select "Show nodes where this software is installed".
#5. You are done. The new report you will see will show you all the nodes by their version of Windows.

However this doesn't help you if you need Mac OS reported as well. While you surely can use the same approach in the "All Software" report, you can try one of the new software reports on the Reports tab.

    #1. Switch to Reports tab.
#2. Select Software -> Customizable software reports -> By software.
#3. Select "All nodes", click Next.
#4. In the next screen find lines starting with Mac OS, and also the ones starting with "OS Microsoft Windows...", choose those you are interested in.
    #5. Click Build.

And you are done. You will get a highly customizable more compact report on which OS is installed where.

Is this what you were looking for? Will you need a screencast for this?

We'll add a filter to this list some time. I agree it's not very intuitive now.
